I was made fun of and bullied my entire life – for my appearance and my weight. Life was tough. I suffered a traumatic injury and also endured a terrible loss at a very young age. Food became my therapy. I was sad, overweight, physically sick from asthma and emotionally sick from allowing others to put me down. One day, as I sat in my car, literally drowning my sorrows in fast food, something made me look up. When I saw the billboard above me advertising St. Luke’s weight loss surgery, it clicked. Since then, I haven’t looked back. 215 pounds lighter, I feel like I have been reborn and am living MY life.

Brian and I found each other later in life and both loved each other for who we were, not what size we were. However, as time went on we both became heavier and decided it was time to take control of our weight loss, for ourselves and for our children. Having weight loss surgery together has been the best decision we have ever made. Today, we are busy truly living and enjoying life. We love not being exhausted all the time or feeling unhappy. To other people considering weight loss surgery, we would say: Stop thinking about it and do it! Give yourself the chance to discover the real you – you are worth it!

Like many people, I’ve struggled with my weight since I was fairly young. I tried every diet in the book, losing and then regaining, losing and then regaining. At 271 pounds, everyday tasks were a struggle and I was in constant pain or discomfort. My son would want to play outside, but I couldn’t keep up. A friend recommended St. Luke’s weight loss program and after attending an info seminar and meeting the team, I knew it was right for me. Old habits are hard to break, but the tools and support at St. Luke’s help make me stronger every day. Now, when we jog outside together, my son can’t keep up with me!

I was thin as a kid and never had weight issues until adulthood. I worked night shift for seven years and struggled with eating late and eating whatever was convenient. It took its toll. Then one day, my daughter and I were at Dorney Park and I couldn’t fit on one of the rollercoasters. That’s when I knew I had to do something about my weight. I did my research and decided on St. Luke’s. Even the hospitals in New York City, where I worked, couldn’t compare with the support and experience of St. Luke’s. Today, my life is much healthier. I shop for fresh produce a couple of times a week, have stopped eating the junk I used to eat and I participate in Crossfit – an activity I never thought I could do. Now, I can do anything!

Struggling with weight my whole life, I didn’t fully realize how much it prevented me from truly experiencing joy in every aspect of my life. Having weight loss surgery and finally being at a healthy, normal weight didn’t just change my life – it gave me life in a new way. I no longer have negative “weight-worry” thoughts and can enjoy life’s simple pleasures like riding a bike again. Support is critical – my husband, family and friends supported me – and the team at St. Luke’s was there every step of the way. Knowing that my support system is strong, I know that I can do anything I put my mind to!

I would diet on my own, but after losing 83 pounds and gaining 40 back, I decided enough was enough. St. Luke’s helped me through all my questions and fears as I decided to have the sleeve gastrectomy. Having the surgery was the best decision I have ever made! I feel like I have been given a new life. I’m enjoying things I couldn’t do before surgery and my self-esteem has improved dramatically. I have more energy in general and am just happier overall. My advice to people considering surgery is: Don’t be scared. The surgery is a way to gain back your life and St. Luke’s staff and bari-buddies will help you every step of the way.

I was always an emotional eater and would eat my troubles away. At age 30, and with three young children, I had reached 300 pounds. I had my whole life in front of me, but my body was holding me back. I couldn’t go up the stairs in my own house without stopping to take a break. I decided it was time to ask for help. A month after surgery, I could feel my clothes becoming loose. Now, I have more confidence than ever and love chasing my family around, without breaks! My advice to people considering surgery is: Don’t let other people tell you this is the easy way out – the surgery is a tool you are given, and it still requires hard work. But if you rely on the support at St. Luke’s, you will be successful.

My father suffered with obesity and ultimately his weight claimed his life. I was determined not to let that happen to me. I’m an Air Force veteran and a fighter – I had to find a solution. Having the surgery was one of the best decisions of my life. I feel younger and am doing things I never thought I would do. I’m going back to school for my masters in Homeland Security. My loved ones are proud of me, and my children see me as a hero. My advice to others: follow your heart, give and get help where needed, follow the rules of the program and once you achieve your goals, give back by helping others succeed in their journey.

Like many overweight individuals, I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. When I was 40, I was diagnosed as diabetic. I lost an aunt to diabetes at the age of 59, and I didn’t want to follow in her path. I chose St. Luke’s for my surgery and haven’t looked back since. Within the first month, I noticed that I wasn’t tired all the time – I finally had energy! I’m 43 years young and I feel like I’m in my 20s! I took up jogging after my surgery and am proud to be a mentor with the First Strides running program for women. My advice to others: My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner!
